Last week, our social media team conducted a survey on Facebook to see whether or not our fans were delaying their emigration as a result of COVID-19. Each and every one of the respondents indicated that they had hit pause till further notice.
Is it fair to blame them?
The majority of foreigners are still unable to enter Australia and New Zealand, and no one can predict when this will change.
Having said that, we don’t think delaying your emigration is the best course of action.
Why do we say that?
1) Critical personnel CAN enter Australia through its borders
Australia has made its borders open to workers in vital industries and to those with vital skills, including those on the new Priority Migration Skilled Occupations List (PMSOL):
List of Priority Skilled Jobs for Immigration

2) Despite the border closures, you can finish necessary portions of your application for a skilled immigrant visa.
First, let’s discuss why you would want to do that. It’s easy. You can submit your visa application as soon as the restrictions are lifted if you finish the necessary steps immediately. If you decide to wait and see what occurs first, you will be miles ahead of other migrants.
Our experts usually advise our clients to put more of an emphasis on the long term rather than the short term.
Now let’s examine those essential components that you can cross off your to-do list. It specifically refers to the skills evaluation, English exam, and Expression of Interest as they relate to applications for skilled migrants under subclasses 189, 190, and 491.
The English test is valid for three years, while the skills assessment is valid for two to three years. If you receive enough points, you can submit an expression of interest. This expression of interest is valid for two years from the date of submission.
Even while there is still a great deal of uncertainty in the globe, in 12 to 18 months we should have greater certainty, and things should return to a state that is very similar to our “old normal.” This covers requests for Australian visas.
3) Australia’s immigration policies could change, making it impossible for you to submit a visa application.
We’re not saying anything to frighten you. This has happened far too frequently in the past, as well.
Consider the two to three year rise in the amount of work experience needed for employer-sponsored work visas. Let’s not overlook the fact that the minimum number of points needed for the skilled migrant category increased from 60 to at least 65.
In the next years, there will be fewer visas available for the skilled immigrant category for the migration years 2020–21.
For example, 16,652 slots were allocated for the skilled independent visa in the 2019–20 fiscal year. There are just 6,500 slots available for the 2020–21 school year. Similar significant drops were observed for the new migration year for both the skilled nomination visa and the skilled work regional visa.
Additionally, Australia is considering making English proficiency tests for partners of Australians applying for permanent residency mandatory. This legislative amendment will take effect in the middle of next year if it is approved by the parliament.
If the partner is a permanent resident, the condition will also apply to the partner who is an Australian citizen. There would be no English proficiency test for citizens.
